Analysis
Lishui is a city at the confluence of mountains and river, where eight settlements stretch along the channels of the Daxi and Oujiang rivers. The territory holds two unique layers of identity a natural and cultural one, with rice terraces and centuries-old villages, and the status of a benchmark Chinese "shan-shui" (mountain-water) city.
The project sets out to translate this heritage into a development model applicable beyond the local context.
Goal-setting
Creation of a city development model that unites eight settlements along the river, preserves the natural landscape as the foundation of the agglomeration's life, and opens the territory for resident participation in its development.
Positioning
The territory's framework is shaped as a continuous network of natural corridors along the river, from which public and residential zones organically emerge. Eight settlements preserve their historical role, unique built fabric, and cultural diversity within this framework.
Design solutions
The Shan-shui Portal is the entry point to the territory, a drop and a circle as symbols of nature's primordial harmony. From it, the landscape unfolds through ring bridges and slopes, drawing residents and visitors into the life of the city.
Nine Dragons — a land-art park with nine hidden spaces, built around the water culture of Lishui
Island Garden Commune — a self-sufficient community set between orchards, historic villages, and a new sports center with a lakeside hospital.
The riverbank has been transformed into a park modeled after traditional rice terraces: floating pedestrian walkways run along the water, while earthen bridges and historic dams connect the terraces into a single continuous route.
Urban and rural wayfinding pylons highlight the unique character of the environment and landscape
Construction management
The city's development unfolds in four phases — from targeted construction of key facilities around existing points of attraction to a network of green routes and new workspaces surrounding them.
The next stage reaches the most remote sections of the waterfront, and in the final phase the territory merges into a single agglomeration.
